In response to the difficulty in identifying specific data on the use of new technologies linked to the Internet in areas with less than 10,000 inhabitants, the Asteo Observatory was born in 2022, with the aim of conducting opinion studies and analysis on the profile of Internet users in small rural municipalities.
Since 2022, Asteo Observatory studies have addressed different aspects related to the digital habits of residents in areas with less than 1,000 inhabitants (62% of all municipalities in Spain) and from 1,001 to 10,000 (29%) that do have an Internet connection, whether fixed or mobile. In 2024, the segment of less than 500 residents was also analyzed for a more in-depth analysis. In 2025, the populations with less than 10,000 and 5,000 residents were analyzed.
