“You won’t be remembered for your CV”

On the second day of the 17th Aotec Fair, Asteo dedicated its knowledge space to future professionals in the sector and guidance for entrepreneurs with the “Siembra Futuro Digital” session. This initiative is also linked to the program launched by the company to contribute to the development of local operators in areas where it deploys its ultra-fast fiber network.
Javier Montemayor, Executive Manager of the Engineering Division at Michael Page, gave an insightful presentation on the skills required in today’s labor market for future telecommunications professionals.

Javier Montemayor, with over ten years of experience in recruitment and professional search, described the current labor market in the telecommunications sector as “highly globalized and competitive,” emphasizing the growing trend toward remote work that expands competition worldwide.

“We are not only competing with people in our local area, but with people from all over the world,” he stated. Furthermore, he highlighted the need for adaptability in a dynamic and changing environment, influenced by global events such as the COVID-19 pandemic and various conflicts.

In terms of sectors, Montemayor noted that the technology sector has experienced significant growth, with a 100% increase in hiring between 2022 and 2023. “There is no unemployment in the tech sector,” he assured, also highlighting growth in areas such as sustainability and the pharma-health sector.

In-demand skills

One of the central points of the presentation was the skills that companies currently look for in candidates. Montemayor divided them into hard and soft skills. Hard skills include technical training, languages, and professional experience. “Hard skills are all those competencies that appear on a CV,” he explained.

On the other hand, soft skills, such as adaptability, flexibility, and communication, are crucial for daily performance and promotion within a company.

“In a changing world, we must be prepared to adapt to new situations,” Montemayor emphasized. He also highlighted the importance of continuous learning, especially in the tech sector, and the ability to manage emotions effectively.

Tips for CVs and interviews

Montemayor offered practical advice for drafting a CV and preparing for interviews. He recommended that the CV be clear, concise, and relevant, and that it should not exceed two pages. “A five-page CV is excessive; one or two pages is sufficient,” he indicated. He also stressed the importance of truthfulness in the CV and preparing a strong cover letter.

Regarding interviews, he advised candidates to be well-prepared and calm. “It is essential to know the company we are visiting and to review the job description,” he noted. Additionally, he recommended practicing answers and bringing something to take notes during the interview. “It is very important to work on active listening to respond appropriately to the interviewer’s questions,” Montemayor added.

You won’t be remembered for your CV

Montemayor concluded his presentation by highlighting that, although the CV is crucial for securing an interview, what really matters in the selection process are the candidate’s soft skills. “No one is going to remember you for your CV; what matters is the person and their attitude,” he stated. During the interview, it is key to effectively convey that one possesses the basic knowledge, skills, and abilities for the position.

Attractive companies for candidates

The talk also addressed various concerns regarding the selection process in the fields of telecommunications and IT. Regarding companies and how to differentiate themselves to attract talent, Montemayor listed the aspects most valued by candidates: Flexibility: Flexible schedules and work modes; Continuous learning: Opportunities for training and development in new technologies; and Work environment: A positive labor environment and a strong sense of belonging, even in remote work modes.

In summary, Montemayor simplified the basic aspects to be considered by those who want to develop a professional career in the telecommunications sector:

  • Research and prepare: Ask about the content of technical tests and prepare in advance.
  • Maintain professional social networks: Although they are not always investigated, having an updated and consistent professional profile on LinkedIn can be beneficial.
  • Seek flexibility and learning: Prioritize companies that offer flexibility and opportunities for continuous growth.
  • Follow the post-interview steps: Ensure you know the next steps and do not hesitate to request feedback.
  • Value personal contact: Make sure to get to know the company and the team you will be working with, especially for roles that are not 100% remote.
