Castrojeriz, Burgos: ultra-fast fiber optic in a historic enclave on the Camino de Santiago

Located on one of the longest stretches of the French Way of the Camino de Santiago, which runs through it for more than 1,500 meters, Castrojeriz is a key stop for pilgrims. Since 2015, it has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “Routes of Santiago de Compostela,” and since 2023, it has been recognized as one of The Most Beautiful Villages of Spain, reinforcing its tourist and cultural appeal.

The municipality preserves a valuable historic-artistic heritage, with elements such as the ruins of Castrojeriz castle, the church of San Juan, the parish church of Santa María, San Juan and Santo Domingo, or the former church of San Esteban, now a pilgrims’ hostel. This heritage, combined with its inclusion in the tourist route of The Four Villages of Amaya, makes the town a leading rural destination.

The arrival of high-speed internet enables Castrojeriz to continue promoting its tourism activity, facilitate remote work, support local entrepreneurs, and improve digital services for both residents and visitors, contributing to development and population retention in the rural environment.

The deployment of ultra-fast fiber optic in Castrojeriz (Burgos) has received financial support from the ÚNICO Broadband 2022 program, promoted by the Ministry for Digital Transformation and Civil Service and funded by the European Union through Next Generation EU funds.
