Heritage, Tourism, and the Camino de Santiago
Santa María La Real de Nieva holds a prominent place in the history and heritage of the province. The town is located on the Madrid route of the Camino de Santiago, and its monastery, declared a Site of Cultural Interest, attracts pilgrims and visitors every year.
The main heritage landmark is the Church-Monastery of Nuestra Señora de la Soterraña, in an archaic Gothic style, built in the first half of the 15th century. Particularly noteworthy are the monastery cloister, whose capitals are richly sculpted with reliefs of great artistic value, and the church portal, both declared national monuments in 1920. Inside, highlights include the Baroque high altar, the choir with carved wooden seats, and the lower choir with Mudejar coffered ceilings, as well as a polychrome carving of Saint Jerome Penitent, attributed to Alonso Berruguete.
Another unique element of the municipality is its bullring, one of the oldest in Spain, inaugurated in 1848. Built with slate masonry and concrete, it has a capacity for three thousand people and is part of the town’s historical and cultural heritage.
