Bridging the digital divide for vulnerable people

Asteo, General

Asteo and Spanish Red Cross sign an agreement to reduce the digital divide for vulnerable people in rural areas

The purpose of this agreement is to facilitate Internet connectivity to people in vulnerable situations, who participate in the different projects of the humanitarian organization where Internet connectivity is essential for its provision, for example, allowing access to essential communication and telecare services, provided that they are within the areas covered by the telecommunications company.

Cruz Roja Española, with a history of more than 160 years as a humanitarian organization of public interest, works actively in the defense of Human Rights and care for people in vulnerable situations, aligning its actions with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda. In this context, the organization will identify people who require connectivity in their homes due to situations of social exclusion or telecare needs. For its part, Asteo will study the feasibility of providing connectivity to the cases identified by the Red Cross in the areas where the telecommunications company’s fiber optic network is available.

The work carried out by the Red Cross in different areas of humanitarian action is essential in our society and its rigorous and serious work to combat the digital divide through training and inclusion of vulnerable groups is a great contribution. For this reason, it is an honor for us to be able to contribute our support in the rural areas where we are present. “. Explains Pedro Abad, CEO of Asteo Red Neutra in relation to the signed agreement.

“Internet connectivity in rural areas of Spain is crucial, especially for people in vulnerable situations, because it facilitates access to essential services such as education, health, access to information or the ability to relate to other people. Connectivity reduces social isolation, allowing people to keep in touch with family and friends. In short, Internet access is a vital tool for improving quality of life and promoting equal opportunities in these communities.” He points out Carlos ForemanDeputy Director, Technology at the Service of the People, of Spanish Red Cross.
