The conversation brought together <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/manuel-garnelo-pereira-41a16b12\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"430\" data-end=\"448\">Manuel Garnelo<\/strong>, CTO of Asteo<\/a>, along with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/francisco-porras-3125b76\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"472\" data-end=\"487\">Francisco Porras<\/strong><\/a>, head of the data center business unit at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.merlinproperties.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"544\" data-end=\"565\">Merlin Properties<\/strong><\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/in\/felix-de-la-fuente-b09b0b3\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"569\" data-end=\"591\">F\u00e9lix de la Fuente<\/strong><\/a>, Chief Commercial Officer of <a href=\"https:\/\/templus.com\/es\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong data-start=\"621\" data-end=\"632\">Templus<\/strong><\/a>. He highlighted two main aspects of the companies present at the meeting: <strong>Templus&#8217;s<\/strong> regional focus and <strong>Merlin Properties&#8217;<\/strong> commitment to large, sustainable data centers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1013\" data-end=\"1385\"><strong>F\u00e9lix de la Fuente<\/strong> explained that <strong>Templus<\/strong> was founded with the aim of deploying <strong data-start=\"1087\" data-end=\"1118\">regional data centers<\/strong>, away from the traditional Madrid-Barcelona axis, with the goal of bringing advanced technological capabilities to less obvious territories. He noted that this model allows for <strong data-start=\"1291\" data-end=\"1382\">talent retention, strengthening the local business fabric, and reducing the technological gap<\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1387\" data-end=\"1759\">For his part, <strong>Paco Porras<\/strong> detailed that <strong>Merlin Properties&#8217;<\/strong> model is oriented towards <strong data-start=\"1473\" data-end=\"1508\">large-scale infrastructures<\/strong>, designed for global clients, especially those linked to <strong data-start=\"1572\" data-end=\"1627\">artificial intelligence model training<\/strong>. These centers do not depend on proximity to the end consumer but on the ability to offer energy and space on a large scale. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1761\" data-end=\"1896\">Both agreed that their proposals are not opposing but <strong data-start=\"1824\" data-end=\"1843\">complementary<\/strong>, responding to different market needs.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1898\" data-end=\"1960\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2670ca;\">Edge, Regional, and Large Centers: A Logistics Chain<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1961\" data-end=\"2308\">The discussion brought up the differentiation between <strong data-start=\"2005\" data-end=\"2026\">edge data centers<\/strong>, regional, and large centers. <strong>De la Fuente<\/strong> explained that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.datacentermarket.es\/dcm-xl\/que-son-los-edge-data-center-ventajas-y-aplicaciones-de-futuro\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">edge<\/a> centers respond to very specific uses\u2014such as IoT, industrial automation, or smart cities\u2014where <strong data-start=\"2187\" data-end=\"2204\">low latency<\/strong> is crucial. Regional centers, on the other hand, serve as a bridge between these facilities and large hubs. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2310\" data-end=\"2597\">Porras drew an analogy with logistics: <strong data-start=\"2359\" data-end=\"2397\">fiber optic cables are the roads<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2404\" data-end=\"2434\">data are the containers<\/strong>. Just as in transport there are last-mile warehouses and long-haul depots, data centers coexist with models of different scales and functions. <\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2599\" data-end=\"2637\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2670ca;\">Spain, a Strategic Position<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2638\" data-end=\"2878\">A central part of the conversation revolved around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.redestelecom.es\/infraestructuras\/radiografia-de-la-interconexion-ip-en-espana\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Spain&#8217;s role<\/a> in the international connectivity map. <strong>Garnelo<\/strong> recalled that the peninsula is a landing point for multiple <strong data-start=\"2816\" data-end=\"2837\">submarine cables<\/strong> connecting America, Africa, and Europe.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2880\" data-end=\"3322\"><strong>Porras<\/strong> highlighted that the country has a <strong data-start=\"2922\" data-end=\"2951\">privileged location<\/strong>, with 70% of traffic between the United States and Europe passing through Spanish territory, and with a promising future on the north-south axis towards Africa, a continent undergoing rapid demographic and digital expansion. Furthermore, Spain has abundant space for construction and a <strong data-start=\"3216\" data-end=\"3254\">significant energy surplus<\/strong> that can become a competitive advantage for this industry. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3324\" data-end=\"3578\"><strong>De la Fuente<\/strong> reinforced this idea by pointing out that the country should aspire not only to be a data corridor but a <strong data-start=\"3435\" data-end=\"3476\">generator and processor of information<\/strong>, leveraging its renewable energy mix and its position at the center of international flows.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3580\" data-end=\"3623\"><strong><span style=\"color: #2670ca;\">Industry, Regulation, and Opportunities<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3624\" data-end=\"4060\">Both speakers agreed that data centers should be considered a <strong data-start=\"3703\" data-end=\"3728\">strategic industry<\/strong>. Porras emphasized that they generate <strong data-start=\"3757\" data-end=\"3789\">highly skilled employment<\/strong> and that their contribution can be comparable to other exporting industrial activities. <strong>De la Fuente<\/strong> added that <strong data-start=\"3905\" data-end=\"3932\">regulatory stability<\/strong> is key to attracting investment: without a clear framework, Spain risks becoming merely a transit territory. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4062\" data-end=\"4567\">Regarding location selection, <strong>Porras<\/strong> explained that <strong>Merlin<\/strong> opts for sites with access to submarine cables and energy availability, often in <strong data-start=\"4227\" data-end=\"4282\">rural areas with a surplus of renewable generation<\/strong>, which in turn boosts local industrialization. <strong>De la Fuente<\/strong>, for his part, noted that <strong>Templus<\/strong> seeks a <strong data-start=\"4392\" data-end=\"4456\">balance between energy, communications, land, and proximity<\/strong>, ensuring that its facilities are a reasonable distance from its clients&#8217; technical teams.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4569\" data-end=\"4595\"><span style=\"color: #2670ca;\"><strong>A Country Opportunity<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4596\" data-end=\"5015\">The session concluded with a shared idea: Spain has a <strong data-start=\"4662\" data-end=\"4694\">unique window of opportunity<\/strong> to consolidate itself as a European benchmark in data centers. But this advantage will only materialize if the different actors in the sector, together with public administrations, work in a coordinated manner to retain data, transform it into value, and prevent it from merely passing through the country&#8217;s network of cables. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5017\" data-end=\"5161\">As <strong>Manuel Garnelo<\/strong> summarized, it is about <strong data-start=\"5058\" data-end=\"5101\">avoiding the &#8220;bypass&#8221; of data<\/strong> and ensuring that it generates wealth and innovation in the territory. <strong>Spain faces the challenge of
