Neutral networks and public-private partnerships: Key to connecting rural areas

Within the framework of AOTEC25, Yolanda Platero, head of the Business Development Area of Correos Telecom.shared the evolution of the company, its current challenges and the vision for the future in the telecommunications sector, at the meetings of Connecting the RURAL to the world at Aotec,

Platero recalled that Correos was a pioneer in telecommunications in Spain:The postal network is the first telecommunications network in Spain. Everything started with the telegraph network with the first telexes and communications were carried out through this network. It is prior to any other network “That initial infrastructure reached more than 2,000 towns and, over time, has been upgraded with fiber optics to become the basis for today’s services.

Recently Correos Telecom celebrated its 25th anniversary. On this journey, Platero said: “We are very proud because we inherited the telegraph network and during all this time we have evolved this network into what it is today, which allows us to provide these services from kilobits to gigabytes“. He also emphasized that growth has been sustainable, with a long-term vision and supported by a solid team.

Looking to the future, Correos Telecom wants to position itself as a neutral operator of reference, focusing on both infrastructures and technological services. In this model, partnerships with local operators are key: “We are committed to collaboration models with local operators to provide our networks and that can serve as support to bring connectivity to rural areas“.

Platero highlighted the role of neutral networks and public-private collaboration to guarantee connectivity in areas with low population density: “Neutral networks are here to stay (…) The role of local operators is key in this ecosystem“.

Finally, he addressed the impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in the sector: “AI tools are key to better manage networks and improve aspects such as customer service or the design of new networks“. They have already incorporated automations in operation and maintenance, but Platero clarified: “We have already incorporated automation in operation and maintenance. AI has to be complemented by teams of experienced people. One without the other will not work “.
